HCM CITY – The HCM City Police yesterday seized seven people for allegedly defrauding other people of VNĐ10 billion (US$448,600) via Facebook.

The seven people who have been detained are Nigerians Augstine Chinonso, 30, and Onu Chinonoso Peter, 31, both residents of HCM City’s District 12; Nguyễn Thị Ngọc Tuyết, 24, from the central Nghệ An Province; Lê Văn Nhóc, 21, from the southern Tây Ninh Province; and Phạm Trường Thành, 23, from the southern Đồng Nai Province; besides Nguyễn Văn Hải, 26, from the southern Bình Thuận Province; and Trần Viết Hùng, 34, from Hà Nội.

Initial investigation showed that the two Nigerians befriended several Vietnamese women on Facebook and promised to send them expensive presents.

Then they joined hands with their Vietnamese accomplices to tell the victims that they were state workers, and asked the women to send money to their bank accounts to pay for customs and transport fees.

The police searched the houses of the culprits and seized 80 ATM cards and other items that they reportedly used in their scam. – VNS
