HCMC invests $21m in tree planting

The government of HCM City plans to invest VNĐ480 billion (US$21 million) to plant trees covering a total of 1,613 hectares, with the target of having 40 per cent of the city with green cover by 2020.

HCM CITY – The government of HCM City plans to invest VNĐ480 billion (US$21 million) to plant trees covering a total of 1,613 ha, with the target of having 40 per cent of the city with green cover by 2020.

According to the plan, the HCM City’s People’s Committee would plant at least five million trees. Of the amount, organisations, households and individuals would plant three million trees on 364 ha of land and 750,000 trees on 790 ha.
In order to reach the target, the city government has sought public support in planting and protecting trees, especially high economic-value trees in Cần Giờ, Củ Chi, Bình Chánh districts. 
The city has launched a campaign to encourage citizens to plant at least one tree at their house, school, or workplace.

Between 2011 and 2015, organisations and individuals planted 5.16 million trees, on an area equivalent to 1,216 ha of land in the urban area.
The city’s Department of Transport has planted 39,827 trees on about 40 ha of land at newly built projects, upgraded transport infrastructure, sidewalks and public parks.

Organisations, households and individuals have planted three million, on an area equivalent to 412 ha of land.  VNS
