HCM CITY (VNS) – Following Hà Nội’s example, HCM City police will now start managing daily patrols on bicycles as a part of a pilot programme.

The District 5 police is the first unit in the city to adopt a bicycle patrol instead of motorbikes or mini trucks, and 59 bikes were officially handed over to the force, which manages 15 wards, yesterday morning.

District police Chief Colonel Nguyễn Văn Tiến said if the model proved effective, the district would receive another 51 bikes.

He said the bicycle patrol would bring the law enforcement forces closer to the residents, while helping the police personnel get fit and save money from the budget at the same time.

Ha Noi police piloted the bicycle programme last year across 12 wards in 12 districts. — VNS
