LAO CAI (VNS) — A forest fire broke out in Ta Van Giay Village, 8km from Sa Pa Town in the northern Lao Cai Province, yesterday.

The forest is part of Hoang Lien Son National Park.

The fire was under control by 3am this morning after 14 hours. Up to eight hectare of the forest were destroyed, according to the provincial Department of Agriculture and Rural Development.

According to Secretary of Ta Van Commune's Party Committee Xi Van Cang, after the fire was reported, the commune sent about 100 local people to help extinguish it, alongside 65 workers and forest wardens from the national park.

The fire is believed to have started in a large area of dead plants, left in the aftermath of the heavy snowfall that hit Sapa last month. The plants in the area dried out because of exposure to strong sunlight for many days and became inflammable. — VNS
