HA NOI (VNS) — An investigation has begun, after another 300 tonnes of fish bred in cages on the Cai Vung River were found dead on Saturday.

Cai Vung River runs through Phu Lam and Phu Thanh communes in the southern province of An Giang's Phu Tan District.

According to the provincial Fisheries Department, some 335 tonnes of fish had died one day earlier. During these two days, local fishermen were able to move their fish cages some 2km away from their original locations, following the failure of oxygen generators.

Contamination of the river water spread to the communes, however, infecting up to 90 per cent of the fish bred in some 120 cages there.

Provincial authorities have since requested related bodies to quickly deal with the mass fish killing and determine the causes, as well as damage to the local fishermen, so they might receive assistance based upon State regulations. — VNS
