HCM CITY (VNS) — Rach Chiec 2 Bridge opened to traffic on Saturday following an inauguration ceremony in the presence of HCM City leaders.

Le Van Khoa, deputy chairman of the city People's Committee, said the bridge, a major transport project for the city and part of Ring Road No.2, was completed three months ahead of schedule.

The bridge links Sai Gon Hi-tech Park with Cat Lai and Hiep Phuoc, which also have ports, and the city's southern urban area.

The US$38.7 million bridge shortens the distance between the park and the two ports by six kilometres compared to the Ha Noi Highway route, and will reduce the traffic on the highway as well as the city's downtown.

The bridge would help reduce traffic congestion and accidents, Khoa said.

The city Department of Culture and Sports has recommended renaming the bridge Phu Huu, which has to be approved by the People's Council. — VNS
