HCM City cracks down on unsafe food

HCM CITY (VNS) — More than 600 food and foodstuff manufacturers and traders in HCM City were found violating food safety and hygiene regulations this month, according to the city Department of Health.

Since December 30 more than 400 inspection teams checked 1,975 establishments.

So far 179 businesses have been fined a total of VND1 billion (USVND992,127,500) while three have been closed down temporarily.

More than 1.8 tonnes of unhygienic food were destroyed.

Most of the violations related to poor hygiene practices by staff, substandard equipment and lack of business registration certificates, Nguyen Huu Hung, deputy director of the department, said. — VNS
