Traffic accidents numbers drop, but still high

HA NOI (VNS) — The National Traffic Safety Committee (NTSC) reported over 1,710 traffic accidents occurred across the country from December, 16, 2015, to January, 15, 2016), killing 735 people and injuring 1,550.

Compared to the same period last year, the number of traffic accidents, deaths and injuries are down by 21 per cent, 6 per cent and 24 per cent, respectively.

Traffic police forces nationwide have checked and recorded 371,900 traffic rules-related violations. A total VND267.6 billion penalty was sent in the State Treasury, and 1,900 cars, 47,500 motorcycles and 1,100 other vehicles were temporarily seized, the committee reported. Police forces also revoked nearly 29,490 driving licences.

Road traffic policemen who conducted inspections on expressways have registered 3,225 cases and collected fines totalling VND3.1 billion.

Twenty cars, and 56 motorbikes were seized while road police forces revoked 450 driving licences.

Over 110 railway and 15,000 maritime traffic safety-violations were registered, with VND33.6 million and VND8.1 billion, respectively, collected in fines.—VNS
