HCM City (VNS) — More than seven tonnes of pork and pork fat were seized by Quang Nam traffic police and Hung Yen police on January 13 and 14.

Two trucks containing 3.5 tonnes of foul-smelling pork were seized yesterday by the traffic police in Quang Nam Province.

First, a truck was stopped and inspected by traffic police on route 1 yesterday, while it was travelling from Da Nang to Quang Ngai.

The police discovered 26 boxes in the truck that contained more than 1.5 tonnes of foul-smelling pork belly, fat and skin.

The meat was to be distributed among restaurants and street eateries in HCM City.

Ten minutes later, the police found two tonnes of processed pork fat of unclear origin on a truck that was travelling from Tam Ky to Da Nang.

The crime prevention police of Hung Yen Province also discovered and destroyed more than four tonnes of decomposing pork on January 13.

The meat, found in a shop in Yen Xa Village in Phan Dinh Phung Commune, reportedly came from dead and sick pigs, and was not accompanied by food safety certificates.

Vu Khuc Thao, the owner of the shop, told the police that he had bought the meat at low prices from nearby provinces and had planned to sell it in Ha Noi and Bac Ninh.

Thao was fined VND23 million ($1,025) and was also asked to pay for the destruction of the meat. — VNS
