HA NOI (VNS) — The People's Court in Ha Noi yesterday sentenced a foreign teacher to four years in prison for sexually abusing teenagers.

At the court, Vadim Scott Benderman, 46, a Canadian, said he entered Viet Nam on May 6, 2014 and was employed as an English teacher at a foreign teaching centre. He also played music in a bar in Hoan Kiem District.

From late 2014 to mid May 5, 2015, Benderman often went to Hoan Kiem Lake at midnight to lure homeless boys, aged 14 to under 16 years, to his guest-house to sleep. He was found guilty of sexually abusing the teens.

After each incident of abuse, Benderman often gave the young teens VND200,000-300,000 (US$9-$13,6).

According to the indictment, four boys were sexually abused by Benderman. During the trial, the prosecutors said Benderman's behaviour had harmed the physical development and psychology of the teens, as well as having an impact upon the country's customs and the social order.

Nguyen Anh Thom, the lawyer defending Benderman, said the defendant admitted to having sexually abused the teens.
