HA NOI (VNS) — A 24-year-old Vietnamese woman was arrested by Australia's New South Wales Police yesterday for allegedly defrauding hundreds of Vietnamese students living in Australia of more than AU$360,000.

The Sydney Morning Herald newspaper reported that the woman, who has a Facebook account in the name of Vi Tran, was arrested at her Petersham home and charged with 10 counts of financial fraud. She has been granted conditional bail and is to appear before Downing Centre Local Court on February 3.

The woman was captured a week after the New South Wales Police started investigating the case.

Statistics collected by the Vietnamese Dynamic Students in New South Wales on January 6 said more than 300 Vietnamese students in Sydney and Melbourne bought cheap air tickets of Viet Nam Airlines to return home before the Tet (Lunar New Year) via her Facebook account.

About 240 of these students have so far found their tickets to be invalid for a section or the whole of their journeys. — VNS
