HCM CITY (VNS) — Livestock found to have been raised with banned substances must be immediately exterminated, the People's Committee of HCM City suggested to the Ministry of Agriculture and Rural Development.

After banned substances were found to pose major health and biological hazards, regulations were enacted to require the authority to hold the livestock from three to 15 days, according to the southern city's committee.

However, the holding facilities are often inadequate both in size and equipment. As a result, it may exacerbate the spread of infectious diseases among livestock, especially during an extended period of time when livestock are exhausted, the committee said.

The city said that immediately exterminating the livestock would minimise the chance of disease outbreaks and deter the use of banned substances in livestock farming.

It would also prevent butcheries and livestock owners from delaying sample testing while forcing them to co-operate with market watch and animal health forces.

The city's animal health department recently increased the number of inspections at livestock and food processing companies. Of 500 pork samples taken from numerous butcheries in cities, banned substances of various degrees were found in 97. — VNS
