DAK LAK (VNS) — Two primary school students in Krong Kmar town in the Central Highlands Dak La k Province's Krong Bong District drowned in a channel in the town on Tuesday.
The town administration said the two students – Nguyen Van Trung, 10, and Tran Duc Hieu, 8, fell into the channel on their way home after school.
Local people found the bodies at the channel gate a few hundred metres away late in the evening that day.
The rural areas in the province are crowded with irrigation systems for coffee and pepper farms, but there are no warnings or handrails to prevent children from falling in.
The province is one of six locals in Viet Nam where a high number of people die of drowning.
In 2014, 63 people, from 6 years to 16 years drowned, while 25 others died in the same manner in the first seven months of 2015. — VNS
