HA NOI (VNS) — The health ministry plans application of more endoscopic robotic techniques in adult surgery in the future after their successful application in paediatric surgery, Lao Dong (Labour) newspaper reported.

Dr Phạm Duy Hiền, director of the children's endoscopy centre under the Central Pediatrics Hospital, said endoscopic robotic surgeries have several advantages, such as high aesthetic value, less invasive procedures and hospital stay, besides rapid recovery.

The robot, with highly flexible arms that can rotate 360 degrees, can reach inaccessible areas with unrivalled precision, compared to conventional surgeries with endoscopic tubes.

The use of robots also allows surgeons a comprehensive preview of surgery procedures, thus enhancing its efficiency.

The Central Pediatrics Hospital will co-ordinate with other hospitals such as Bạch Mai, Việt Đức and 108 to implement this application, helping people to access modern technology.

The use of endoscopic robotic techniques in adult surgery is considered feasible and safe, but the cost is still very high.

The cost of a robotic laparoscopic surgery for adults in many countries is about US$15,000 to $30,000.

Viet Nam is the first country in Southeast Asia to successfully use robotic laparoscopic surgery for children.
