HCM CITY (VNS) — Around 40,000 litres of petrol leaked into the Tien River, a tributary of the Mekong River in the Cuu Long (Mekong) Delta province of Tien Giang, after a collision between a petrol boat and a sand barge on Tuesday.
The boat of the State-owned fuel retailer Petrolimex was carrying 1.2 million litres of petrol as it travelled from HCM City to Cambodia in the evening. When it arrived at Cho Gao Canal and Tien River in Tien Giang Province's My Tho City, the boat collided with the sand barge, which was carrying about 1,000 cubic metres of sand and travelling in the opposite direction.
The crash caused a three-metre long gash in the tanker's hull. The barge was not damaged. Petrolimex sent vessels to the site to transfer all the remaining fuel from the damaged vessel to prevent further gas spills and possible fires or explosions. — VNS
