HA NOI (VNS) — The public security ministry's department of road and railway traffic police plans to arm traffic policemen with weapons to protect themselves from law breakers who deliberately defy law enforcers.

Tran Son Ha, head of the department, said in many localities, law breakers who deliberately defied law enforcers were not strictly punished, with most of them being fined several hundreds of dong.

Thus, the weapons for the traffic police would help tighten the enforcement of law, he said.

Last Saturday, a traffic policeman was hit by a truck and dragged along for about 20m at an intersection in Ha Noi when he tried to stop the truck for inspection.

Senior Lieutenant Nguyen Quoc Dat, from the municipal department of road and rail traffic police, attempted to stop the truck when it collided with a car on National Highway No 5 in Long Bien District.

The truck driver accelerated and drove the vehicle straight at the officer, hitting and dragging him for about 20m on the road.

The officer was hospitalised for emergency treatment. Doan Van Chuyen, the truck driver, has been detained for further investigation.

According to Ha, the driver's action signalled immoral behaviour and disregard of the law. He considered the incident a serious offence.

He said the department has been collecting evidence to prosecute the driver for violating the law.

Figures from the department showed that there were about 200 cases of law breakers defying law enforcers in the past five years, leaving many police officers dead or seriously injured. — VNS
