VN debuts at int'l computer programming contest

HÀ NỘI (VNS) –– Five Vietnamese students received prizes at Digital Campus WeCode 2015, organised in Kuala Lumpur, Malaysia, yesterday.

Digital Campus WeCode is a multi-tiered programming competition for primary and secondary school students in the Southeast Asian region. Participants are challenged to produce a masterpiece in games, entertainment, or animation apps.

Under this year's theme, "Cyber Security," the competition's creative game award, the first prize in the executive category, went to Vũ Duy Hiếu, an 8th-grader from FPT secondary school.

Nguyễn Hà My and Phạm Phương Linh from the Hà Nội-based Vinschool primary school and Nguyễn Quang Đăng and Lê Gia Bảo from the Hà Nội-based FPT secondary school received team awards in the freshman and sophomore categories.

This was the first time Việt Nam had taken part in the competition.

This year, Digital Campus WeCode attracted the participation of 136 teams from Việt Nam, the Philippines, Malaysia and Indonesia. Việt Nam sent 14 students, divided into eight groups, to join the contest.

Held by Youth On Unity, a non-profit organisation dedicated to the social, educational and physical development of the youth, the competition aimed to cultivate the students' Higher Order Thinking Skills, such as problem-solving, creative thinking and finding innovative solutions.

The Vietnamese contestants are scheduled to return home tomorrow. –– VNS
