HCM City (VNS) — Hundreds of firefighters battled a blaze that destroyed at least eight houses and caused chaos for many hours in central HCM City on Tuesday.

The fire, which broke out at about 3pm in a house in Vo Van Kiet Street, District 1, spread quickly to other houses nearby and forced hundreds of people to leave the area.

There has been no confirmation about any casualties or injuries, but the damage is estimated to be worth billions of dong.

About 150 firefighters and 25 fire-fighting trucks were sent to the area to extinguish the blaze.

The firefighters took more than two hours to extinguish it and relocate all affected people to safer areas.

Residents said they heard explosions before the blaze broke out and the smoke rose high.

Hoang Thi Lien, an official of Cau Ong Lanh Ward where the blaze broke out, said the authorities have arranged new accommodation for the affected residents and have given initial financial aid of about VND30 million (roughly US$1,400) to them.

The cause of the fire was still being investigated, the official said.—VNS
