HA NOI (VNS) — As many as 21 of the total 70 bottling establishments in the central province of Nghe An have been suspended for producing poor-quality bottled water.

The provincial Department of Science and Technology (DST) fined these enterprises a total of VND35 million (US$ 1,560) after an inspection of 37 bottled drinking water production facilities in the province.

Tests showed that water samples manufactured by these bodies were sub-standard. Many of them contained pseudomonas bacteria, a type of bacteria that causes many serious complications for people such as endocarditis, respiratory tract infections, and pneumonia and bloodstream infections.

"In addition to administrative sanctions, the DST will order the provincial People's Committee to instruct the provincial Department of Health to suspend the operations of all the facilities who have violated water safety regulations," a department's inspector said.

More than 10 days ago, the Head of Standard and Quality Management Branch under the provincial Department for Standard, Measure and Quality, Trinh Quang Thong was suspended due to violations committed by him in granting water testing certificates.

Thong was alleged to have arbitrarily given water testing certificates with the seals of the departments to bottled water facilities in the province.

All these certificates were granted without the signature of the heads of the department, the testing results recorded in certifications were falsified and the seals had expired since October 2012.

These papers were granted for multiple bottled water facilities in the province, including some of the above 21 facilities. — VNS
