HA NOI — The People's Court in Ha Noi yesterday opened the trial and sentenced a Ukrainian person accused of illegally appropriating money to three years in prison.

Asadcgukh Serhiy, 30, was accused of using telecommunications, the Internet or digital devices to appropriate property.

Serhiy entered Viet Nam on April 4 through Tan Son Nhat Airport and stayed at a hotel in Hoan Kiem District.

On May 14, he walked around the city and picked up a backpack on Hoan Kiem District's Nha Tho Street.

The backpack contained many cards such as ATM cards and papers with numbers of cards and passwords to access them.

Serhiy knew all the cards were fake but still used them to withdraw more than VND132 million ($6,000) from ATMs in Ha Noi's Old Quarter.

He was arrested by Ha Noi Police on May 21. — VNS
