HA NOI (VNS) — About 48 people were treated for symptoms of food poisoning after they ate bread bought from a local bakery in Dong Hoi City in the central Quang Binh Province.

Deputy head of Quang Binh's Department of Food Safety and Hygiene Tran Quyet Thang told the Lao Dong (Labour) newspaper that 36 out of the 48 people were hospitalised after they showed symptoms of food poisoning such as vomiting, fever, stomach ache and diarrhoea.

Bui Xuan Quang, a 41-year-old worker of Tan Phat Sport Company in Dong Hoi City, told the Nguoi Lao Dong (Labourers) newspaper that at about 7pm on Wednesday, the company bought the bread from Vuong Tien Thanh Bakery for the workers.

An hour after they ate the bread, 20 workers suffered vomiting and diarrhoea and were rushed to the Dong Hoi-based Viet Nam-Cuba Friendship Hospital.

By 4pm yesterday, the number of those affected had risen to 48, including 10 children under the age of 15.

The provincial Department of Food Safety and Hygiene has sent the bread samples to the provincial preventive medicine department to determine the cause of food poisoning.

Vuong Tien Thanh Bakery reportedly has five branches in Dong Hoi City. After the incident, work at three of the bakery's branches was suspended. The owners of the bakery visited the victims of food poisoning.

The incident is being investigated further. — VNS
