Tornado damages 45 houses in Tien Giang

TIEN GIANG (VNS) — A tornado accompanied by heavy rain blew away roofs of 45 houses in Tan Phuoc District of the Cuu Long (Mekong) Delta province of Tien Giang yesterday afternoon.

The district's Department of Agriculture and Rural Development said that the estimated loss caused by the tornado was to the tune of VND500 million (nearly US$25,000).

In Phuoc My town alone, 36 houses had their roofs blown away, and one was completely demolished.

Two other houses collapsed in Tan Hoa and Phuoc Lap wards.

Vice Chairman of Tan Phuoc District People's Committee, Tran Van Nhan said that local authorities had been stepping up efforts to clear the damage.

Security forces have been mobilised to help local residents repair homes, clear cut-off trees and stabilise lives.

Local residents said they had no time to prepare themselves as the tornado hit them suddenly. — VNS
