AN GIANG (VNS) – A leaking dam in southern An Giang province has become a source of worry for thousands of households in the province for the past several months.
The Thanh Long dam is located on the 700m-high Cam Mountain, at an altitude of 400m above the sea, and contains 255,000cu.m of water.
Construction of the dam started in 2011 and finished in 2014, at a total cost of VND45billion (US$2 million). According to local inhabitants, it was downgraded after it began operations.
"We have always been worried. We are afraid that the dam will burst. At night, we have to mobilise someone to guard the dam and to inform us as soon as possible if any incident occurs," Ly Son Dang, a member of one of the 60 households living near the foot of the dam, says.
"8,000 other households living at the foot of the mountain would also be affected if the dam broke," another local inhabitant said.
"We have just asked the provincial Department of Agriculture and Rural development (the investor of the project), to verify the safety of the dam," Nguyen Hung Cuong, chief of the People's Committee's Secretariat of Tinh Bien Chanh district, said.
Lu Cam Khuong, deputy director of the provincial department, said they discovered a 0.5m – large crevice which runs 15m at the foot of the dam.
"We invested VND6.5 billion to deal with the crevice in April. Since then, we have closely followed this situation. However, we could not prevent the dam from leaking," Khuong said.
He said the department would soon check the quality of the dam and officially announce it to local inhabitants.
The 18m-high and 170m-long dam is located in An Hao commune, Tinh Bien district. VNS
