HA NOI (VNS) — The People's Court in Ha Noi yesterday concluded the trial of Fang Wen Zhong, a Chinese man charged with attempted robbery, sentencing him to seven years' imprisonment.

On February 3, Zhong left the southern Binh Duong province for Ha Noi to meet his girlfriend, Nga, taking with him two tear-gas sprays typically used for self-defence.

He stayed at Nga's house for more than a week. On February 11, he decided to return to China and asked Nga to see him off at the bus station.

Upon arrival at Yen Nghia bus station in Ha Dong District, Zhong decided to buy fruit for Nga, who had suffered from motion sickness during the journey.

Since he had no money, Zhong decided to steal. He left Nga at the bus station, saying he was going somewhere to collect money.

He travelled to Chuong My District by bus and noticed a jewellery shop on Got Street.

Since there were only a few people walking around the area, he stood outside the shop, waiting for the chance to strike.

He then entered the shop when the owner was alone. The owner was busy washing his hands in the attached toilet when Zhong approached him and sprayed tear gas in his face.

When the victim shouted for help, Zhong panicked and ran away, without taking anything from the shop.

The local police arrested him on sight.
