HUNG YEN  (VNS) — The northern province of Hung Yen's Dong Tao Commune started boasting its special chicken as a local collective trademark.

Distinctive for their gigantic drumsticks, Dong Tao's chicken have heavy figures, thick skin and red meat. The delicacy has long been popular among gourmet groups across the country.

The trademark recognition is the result of a project started in 2013 by Hung Yen's Department of Science and Technology and the Investip Company. Under the project, a local association was set up to protect the rights of its 60 members, who follow strict farming and processing criteria under the copyright agreement while launching market promotions.

The association's leader, Le Quang Thang, said the initiative equipped his members with breeding and farming techniques, and helped local farmers access new markets.

As such, 2,000 households in the commune are raising 40,000 Dong Tao chickens.

According to Ngo Xuan Thai, director of the provincial Department of Science and Technology, another project on preserving and developing the species was also underway in a bid to expand the farming model to other parts of the province. — VNS
