HA NOI (VNS)— An appeals court in Ha Noi yesterday rejected an appeal from a doctor who threw his patient's body into the Hong (Red) River after a botched cosmetic breast operation.

He was sentenced to 19 years in prison in October last year.

The appeal by Nguyen Manh Tuong, 42, a former doctor at Ha Noi-based Bach Mai Hospital, insisted he was innocent, but this was judged as baseless by the court.

His violations were said to have caused serious consequences, "leading to the death of the victim and damaging the credibility of Bach Mai hospital and the health care sector of the nation".

The court sentenced Tuong to 14 years behind bars for violations on medical examining and treatment and another five years for infringement of regulations on human remains.

He was also banned from working in the medical sector for five years after being released from the prison.

On October 10, 2013, Tuong drove the body of Le Thi Thanh Huyen, who had died on the operating table from complications during breast surgery at his cosmetic centre Cat Tuong on the same day, to the Hong River and dumped her in the water.

He was accompanied by the centre's security guard Dao Quang Khanh, who was sentenced to 33 months in prison last year.

Huyen's body remained missing until being found nearly one year later in the river in Gia Lam district. — VNS
