HA NOI — Sudden rains which battered Ha Noi early Tuesday morning with heavy rainfalls of up to 60mm, have caused heavy floods to many inner-city wards.
The rain struck during the rush hour as students were traveling to school and public servants to their offices, causing traffic jams that stranded cars, trucks and buses.
Most of Ha Noi's major streets were submerged in Doi Can, Lieu Giai, Cao Ba Quat, Quan Thanh, and Pham Van Dong.
Thousands of vehicles became stranded during major traffic jams caused by the rain, especially in Nguyen Trai, Khuat Duy Tien, Cau Giay, Xuan Thuy, and Huynh Thuc Khang streets where many universities, high schools and office buildings are located.
Some residents were stranded for up to two hours.
"I left for home by motorbike at 7am and it took until 8.30am to arrive at my office building, 2.5km from my house," said a public servant on Bac Tu Liem District's Phu Dien Street, Dao Thu Hoai.
Rainfall in Bac Tu Liem District was reported to have reached 40mm. However, most streets in the area were caught in traffic jams.
By 9am, traffic on several streets had cleared. But on some flooded roads, vehicles remained stranded.
Motorbikes and cars were also stuck along 3km of road in Nguyen Van Cu Street, Long Bien District.
Hundreds of policemen were reported on duty.
Also, Ha Noi Drainage Company workers manned pumps to drain the city. — VNS
