HA NOI (VNS) — Deputy Prime Minister, Hoang Trung Hai, on Wednesday and Thursday, was on a mission to inspect the resettlement work for people affected by the construction of the Son La - Lai Chau hydro power plants, in the upper north of Viet Nam.
During his visit to Muong Lay commune, the largest resettlement area for the Son La and Lai Chau hydro power plants, Hai was told by the new settlers that they were happy with their new life there. They said their average income had doubled or tripled compared with that in the past. For some households, their income even increased by 10 times.
Recent statistics show that the percentage of poor household living surrounding the two hydro power plants dropped to 15-20 per cent compared with 45-50 per cent before these two projects started.
Talking to local authorities in the two provinces of Lai Chau and Son La, Hai asked them to pay more attention to improve the living conditions of people living in new settlement areas.
He ordered them to settle as quick as possible of work of land compensation and allocation to all household affected by the construction of the two hydro power plants.
"All these tasks must be completed by the end of 2015," Hai said.
By August 20, the Son La hydro power plant has produced 33.7 billion kWh and contributed to the State coffer of the three provinces of Son La, Dien Bien and Lai Chau VND 4,029 billion (US$179.3 million) and handed over to the State budget VND 689 billion ($30.7 million) from the forest environmental service.
For the Lai Chau hydro power plant, the first generator is expected togenerate electricity before December 31,2015 and the whole project will be completed in 2016.
Hai said from now till the days the two landmarks are completed, the Lai Chau project owner and contractors must pay special attention to work safety while supporting the local people to happy life in new settlementareas. — VNS
