HCM CITY (VNS) — Doctors at the HCM City University Medical Centre have saved the life of a baby born with its heart outside the chest cavity, the first such operation in the country.

The baby, from Binh Duong Province, had been diagnosed prenatally with ectopia cordis, an extremely rare and fatal condition.

Medical specialists from a variety of fields, comprising cardiac surgeons, plastic surgeons, pediatric surgeons, gastroenterologists and anesthesiologists, conducted careful consultations to choose an optimal treatment solution for the condition.

On June 26, the first phase of surgery was done to repair cardiac defects associated with the condition.

Three days later, the second phase of the surgery reconstructed the defect, placing her heart back inside her chest.

Two months after the operation, her health condition became stable and she was then discharged from the hospital.

Two weeks after leaving the hospital, her follow-up examinations showed that she had made progress in her physical and emotional recovery, doctors said. — VNS
