YEN BAI (VNS) — A suspect in the murder of a four-member family in the northern mountainous Yen Bai Province has been arrested, local police reported yesterday.

Hoang Van Duong, chief police officer of the Van Yen District, said the suspect, 27-year-old Dang Van Hung, who earlier fled with his girl friend, Nguyen Thi Han, or Huong, 30, was arrested at 10am on Saturday while hiding in the forest in the Luc Yen District.

Officials noted that Hung might have been carrying a gun but no weapon was found when he was apprehended.

Duong said that the intensive manhunt conducted by police had forced the suspects to hide in the forest.

Earlier on Friday, police issued an alert to all local areas and mobilised more than 300 policemen to take part in the search for the suspect, who was reportedly a neighbour of the four victims in Lam Giang Commune in Van Yen District.

Officials said the murder occurred following a row between the suspect and the victims, who included a married couple, their child and the wife's sister.

Hung murdered the four persons with a large knife on Thursday evening when the victims were working in a paddy field, said officials.

Initial investigations by the local police indicated that a land dispute was probably the motive behind the murders.
