HA NOI (VNS) — The ASEAN Women's Circle of Ha Noi (AWCH) was inaugurated in the capital city yesterday, lauded by the Deputy Prime Minister and Minister of Foreign Affairs Pham Binh Minh as a significant step towards the realisation of the bloc's common goals.
The AWCH brings together wives of diplomats of ASEAN nations, and female staff from the Vietnamese Foreign Ministry and from regional government agencies based in Ha Noi.
The creation of AWCH follows the 48th founding anniversary of ASEAN on August 8, and comes in Viet Nam's 20th year of ASEAN membership.
Nguyen Nguyet Nga, an executive board member of the Vietnam Women's Union and wife of Deputy PM Minh, will serve as the honorary Chairwoman.
The purpose of the AWCH is to build bridges of friendship and cooperation between Vietnamese women and their peers in ASEAN. The organisation will focus on creating opportunities for women across the region to share information and experiences, to promote gender equality and to increase the role and number of women diplomats.
Addressing the event, Deputy PM Minh said the launch was of critical importance given ASEAN's theme for the year, Our People, Our Community, Our Vision. He said that women are an inseparable part of the ASEAN Community.
On behalf of women in the region, Karen Low Zabidi – spouse of the Ambassador of Malaysia, the current Country Chair of ASEAN – spoke, adding that AWCH's activities will enhance connectivity and the values of solidarity and cooperation in the ASEAN Community.
A column for the AWCH was added to the Foreign Ministry's website at www.mofa.gov.vn . — VNS
