HCM City — The HCM City People's Procuracy today apologised to Truong Ba Nhan, 53, a resident of Binh Thanh District in HCM City, for his wrongful conviction.

The public apology was given at a meeting held with the local people and the district authority representatives in a hall of the People's Committee of the district's ward 13.

This is in addition to the VND300-million (roughly US$14,600) compensation that the local People Procuracy has agreed to give to Nhan.

The procuracy also promised to publish its apology to Nhan in three consecutive issues of the Phap Luat Thanh pho Ho Chi Minh (HCM City Law) and Thanh Nien (Young People) newspapers.

Nhan was wrongfully prosecuted and found guilty of robbery and murder four years ago. He was in prison for 1,346 days.

He was released after his lawyer successfully proved his conviction was wrong.

Meanwhile, the People's Procuracy in the southern Dong Nai Province's Tan Phu District said yesterday it had sent a letter to Ha Ngoc Bich from HCM City's District 4, inviting her to a public apology meeting on August 13.

The procuracy said it would apologise to her for having wrongly accused her of destroying public property.

Ngoc's case was reported several times in the Phap Luat Thanh pho Ho Chi Minh newspaper, which helped to confirm that she had been wrongfully convicted. — VNS
