DIEN BIEN —Tuan Giao District People's Committee in the northern Dien Bien Province yesterday opened a floating bridge to replace Hieu Village's bridge in Chieng Sinh Commune.

The village bridge had been damaged by floods early this month.

The 25m-long and 2m-wide floating bridge is made of bamboo and plastic barrels.

The Hieu Village bridge was the only bridge spanning the stream Nam Hua, connecting Chieng Sinh and Chieng Dong Communes.

The bridge was damaged by floods on August 1. Its surface started tilting, making it difficult for almost 700 households to use it.

Some residents were still crossing the damaged bridge, even though the local authorities had restricted people from using it.

Chairman of Tuan Giao District People's Committee Lo Van Hoan said the floating bridge was expected to ensure the safety of commuters.

The damaged bridge was expected to be repaired within six months, he said. — VNS
