HANOI (VNS) — The transport ministry has set a plan to complete the North-South express rail line by 2040.

At a meeting in Ha Noi yesterday, Deputy Transport Minister Nguyen Ngoc Dong said the ministry would focus on studying the implementation of the project till 2020. They will begin with the study of the sections from HCM City to Nha Trang City and from Ha Noi to Vinh City.

Relevant transport agencies will hold workshops to receive feedback from experts and the public. The ministry will submit the proposal to the National Assembly for its approval by 2018.

Dong said there would be difficulties in mobilising capital, techniques and human resources. International experts will be invited to study the project.

Minister Dinh La Thang asked the relevant agencies to finish the study by 2020 and to start the project immediately after that.

Earlier this year, the government approved the railway development strategy for the 2020-2030 period, according to which train speeds will be from 160km per hour to 200km per hour. The width of the rail lines will be up to 1,435m. There will be further upgrades to raise the train speed to 350km per hour by 2050. — VNS
