HA NOI (VNS) — People in several northern provinces of the country continued to be hit by more rain and floods today.
As of 2pm today, rains and floods have left 22 people dead, while nine are missing in the northern provinces of Quang Ninh, Dien Bien, Lai Chau and Son La, besides Cao Bang, the Office of the National Steering Committee on Disaster Prevention and Control said.
The downpour led to the collapse and flooding of more than 9,000 houses, submerged 2,500ha of rice fields, and killed more than 13,500 heads of cattle.
In Quang Ninh Province, the week-long record rains and floods from July 25 to 31 made the province's Viet Nam National Coal and Mineral Industries Group suffer a huge loss of VND1 trillion (US$4.7 million).
The province has given more than 4,000 affected households (whose houses had collapsed or been flooded) VND2 million to VND50 million to help them stabilise their lives after the floods.
Thousands of households in the province are facing a shortage of potable water. The Quang Ninh Clean Water Company has mobilised water cars from 6am to 9pm daily to provide potable water to households, enterprises and hospitals in Ha Long and Cam Pha cities.
According to the National Centre for Hydro-Meteorological Forecasting, moderate to heavy rains will continue till tomorrow. — VNS
