HA NOI (VNS) — Hundreds of thousands of residents in Ha Noi will be moved to safe places if a strong typhoon hits the capital, deputy chairman of the municipal People's Committee Tran Xuan Viet said yesterday.

Viet said they would be moved to schools, cultural houses (dinh), sporting halls and other strong public buildings when winds reached more than 118km per hour.

He added that evacuations would begin the day before the full force of the typhoon was expected.

Ha Noi plans to assign about 50,000 workers from state agencies to join rescuers. More than 100,000 militiamen and youth union members - and nearly 13,000 soldiers will also help. — VNS
