HA NOI (VNS) — The Republic of Korea's (RoK) General Department of Tourism and a consortium of Ha Noi travel agencies organised a tourism promotion programme yesterday to boost travel to the RoK after its recent bout with Middle East Respiratory Syndrome Coronavirus (MERS-CoV).

Representatives from the RoK Tourism department said that the MERS-CoV outbreak reduced the number of Vietnamese visitors remarkably. In June alone, the figure reduced by 19 per cent.

The department set a new target of attracting about 200,000 Vietnamese visitors in 2015.

No new MERS-CoV infections or fatalities were reported in the RoK in the last 20 days, the department said, adding that the RoK government plans to officially announce the disease's eradication in the country.

Representatives from the Viet Nam National Administration of Tourism said the RoK has made every effort to draw arrivals to the country such as providing free entry via a number of tourism sites and providing insurance for international tourists visiting between the end of June to the end of September.

A tourism promotion programme launched on July 10 will last until September 21 to encourage visitors to visit the RoK this summer. — VNS
