HA NOI (VNS) — Ha Noi People's Committee Deputy Chairman Tran Xuan Viet has asked the municipal department of agriculture and rural development to tighten food safety and hygiene control in the city's slaughterhouses.

The city authorities have, so far, succeeded in controlling hygiene at just 44 per cent of the livestock and poultry slaughterhouses in the city, Viet said at a seminar in Ha Noi on the issue on Wednesday.

He said the city had six industrial slaughterhouses, and 2,500 small non-mechanised slaughterhouses that were under the local authorities' control.

The chaotic situation has caused serious problems related to food hygiene and safety.

The People's Committee has asked the department to gradually suspend the operation of small slaughterhouses that do not meet food safety and hygiene requirements, tighten control over veterinary and environmental hygiene and food safety in small slaughterhouses, and to strictly deal with violations as per the law. The slaughter of animals should be prohibited inside the city and in places with a large population.

The local authorities are responsible for publicising legal regulations among the people, and for encouraging traders and consumers to use the meat provided by slaughterhouses that are under the control of specialised veterinary authorities.

Ha Noi has the largest number of cattle and poultry in the country, amounting to 1.3 million pigs, 23.2 million poultry and 170,000 buffaloes and cows. — VNS
