HA NOI (VNS) - The Nhi Dong 1 Paediatric Hospital is working with the HCM City Paediatric Cardiology and Congenital Heart Diseases Association to open a congenital heart disease treatment network in the south.

The creation of the network is seen as an important step in reducing the number of children suffering from congenital heart disease who have been awaiting surgery in the nation's southern region, said head of the hospital's Cardiology Department, Vu Minh Phuc.

Children who were diagnosed with congenital heart disease and undergone surgery at the hospital would be continuously treated and monitored by the hospital. Any child with congenital heart disease would be sent to a designated hospital for examination and treatment.

The network's operation is expected to minimise the overload of patients at the Nhi Dong 1 Paediatric Hospital and save time and money for patients' families.

At the moment, provinces having participated in the network include Can Tho, Kien Giang, Dong Nai and An Giang.

About 1,300 children are waiting for heart surgery at the hospital. The hospital has performed heart surgeries for over 3,100 children, including 645 patients with complicated and serious conditions and 125 newborn babies since 2004. — VNS
