QUANG TRI (Biz Hub) — The wreckage of an American bomber jet has been found in the sea off the central Quang Tri Province.

The aircraft is believed to be the MacDonnell Douglas F-4 Phantom II that was used by the United States Army during the war.

Tran Van Cong, a fisherman in the province's Vinh Linh District, found parts of the tandem aircraft in the sea when he was diving for shellfish 5km offshore.

He and other fishermen retrieved the wreckage and took some of its parts home. The remaining, which is believed the rear part, was left on the local beach because it was too heavy to be moved.

Local experts said the plane was an F-4 Phantom bomber. The local authorities have contacted the province's diplomatic agencies as they thought the wreckage could lead to the discovery of the remains of more American soldiers in the area.

During the war, the United States Army deployed the F-4 Phantom for tasks of both the Navy and the Air Force. Some elderly persons in the locality said they remembered some jet crashes in the area. Quang Tri was the locality that was hit the hardest by American bombs during the war. — VNS
