SOC TRANG (VNS) — The People's Committee of Soc Trang southern province has taken measures for disaster prevention and search and rescue operation for this year's coming rainy season, an official said.

Le Thanh Tri, vice chairman of the committee, stated that the rainy season is approaching, so local authorities need to coordinate closely with the provincial Standing Committee for disaster prevention and search and rescue operations, as well as set up plans and implement disaster prevention measures in localities.

Last month, Nga Nam township was hit by heavy rains, which damaged several houses and properties here.

The construction of dykes should be reviewed immediately to minimise damage in the event of any disaster, Tri added.

Most important is to ensure the timely dissemination of information about weather and climate so that local people can respond before disasters strike.

The provincial authorities reported at least 31 instances of heavy rain and whirlwind last year. Apart from this, 55 houses collapsed, 201 houses caved in, and several trees were uprooted, causing power failures in districts such as Thanh Tri, My Xuyen, Nga Nam, and Vinh Chau.

It was estimated that the collective damage from heavy rains and whirlwinds reached VND16 billion (more than US$740,000). — VNS
