HAI PHONG (VNS) — The People's Committee of Hai Phong City has affirmed that closing of Tam Bac Coach Station was in the best interests of the city's traffic.

In a report to the Government, the committee said that Tam Bac Coach Station, once the largest station in the centre of the city, was built in 1989 and measured 2,700 square metres. The coach station was surrounded by Sat and Tam Bac markets, causing constant traffic chaos to the area.

In 2011, the committee agreed to the plan of moving the coach station to another place. Land at Ha Noi Road in Hong Bang District was chosen to build a new bus station two years later.

Last January, construction of the Thuong Ly Coach Station began in this area. It was officially opened for traffic this May.

The committee was later required to shift 106 out of 143 coaches running on the Ha Noi –Hai Phong route from Tam Bac to newly-built Thuong Ly Coach Station.

Due to the short time available, many transport enterprises opposed the idea as they were not ready to move. In response, the committee asked the municipal Department of Transport to allocate coaches to Niem Nghia, Cau Rao and Thuong Ly stations.

Due to the sudden change early this month, two enterprises sent petitions over the moving of their coaches, claiming it had seriously affected their businesses.

To solve the problem, on June 24, the department agreed to let the two enterprises move back to Thuong Ly Coach Station as per their wish.

Currently, there are 60 coaches running the Hai Phong-Ha Noi route every day. — VNS
