HCM CITY (VNS) — Authorities in HCM City's Thu Duc District are trying to deal with landslides reported along the Sai Gon river bank in Hiep Phuoc Ward last night.

Two houses and many properties were swept away by the river.

At 11pm, following heavy rains accompanied by strong winds, water level in the river rose quickly, causing cracks, subsidence, and erosion of a section of the river.

Power and telecommunication systems in the area were completely paralysed, while some 100m of road No.7 was also swept away.

According to a resident of the area, two houses with three persons and several properties had been destroyed in the landslide. The three persons were rescued by fishing farmers.

As the risk of landslides persists, local authorities have moved the families of at least three houses located in the danger zone.

An official said erosions and landslides happened at night, so people were caught off guard. Their properties disappeared in the blink of an eye.

Earlier, at 6pm on the same day, a heavy rain with whirlwind occurred in many areas of the city. Two persons were reported injured.

On Dinh Tien Hoang Street, a large tree uprooted, crushing a tourist car, a resident noted.

The driver of the car sustained serious injuries and was shifted to a hospital by local residents. — VNS
