HA NOI (VNS) — Song Da Corporation has proposed the Ministry of Transport to build a tunnel across Ngang Mountain Pass, some 240-480 metres from the existing one to the East.

According to the corporation, the 2.76-km-long project will begin from Ky Anh District in central Ha Tinh Province and end at Quang Trach District in central Quang Binh Province.

The tunnel will be 12m wide and designed for vehicles moving at 60kmph.

The total investment capital of the project will be more than VND900 billion (US$41.4 million), and it will be developed under the build-operate- transfer (BOT) model.

The coverage of the tunnel will be built in concrete, with a minimum thickness of 30cm. Other facilities such as water and drainage systems, ventilation and lighting systems, and traffic safety systems have also been included in the project proposal.

According to the corporation, the location of the new tunnel has been carefully considered to reduce the cost of dealing with geological complications.

Once complete, the tunnel will add to the convenience of using National Highway 1, which runs through Ha Tinh and Quang Binh central provinces.

The period of payback and recovering the cost of the project (toll collection) is expected to be 19 years and eight months.

If approved, the project will be officially kicked off in the second quarter of next year and will be completed in the second quarter of 2018.

The existing 500-m-long six-lane tunnel across Ngang Mountain Pass in Hoanh Son Mountain was opened for traffic in August 2004. It was developed under the BOT model at VND150 billion ($7.08 million). — VNS
