QUANG NINH (VNS) — Ha Long City's Military Command has defused a 250kg bomb that was found by a local citizen in the northeastern province of Quang Ninh.
Vi Van Thang who was working in his garden in Ha Long City on Monday found the 1.6m-long and 30-35-cm diameter explosive and informed the city's local authority.
The city's Military Command today successfully defused the bomb and moved it away.
The bomb was reportedly made in the United States and was dropped in the area during the US 1968-72 war in northern Viet Nam.
Early this month, sappers in the southern province of Binh Phuoc deactivated a 300kg bomb.
The 2-metre-long bomb was found buried one metre below the ground in a residential area in Tan Binh Ward, Dong Xoai town.
The bomb was moved to the Sapper High Command's centre, where it was defused.
Preliminary statistics show that over the last four decades, unexploded ordnances have claimed more than 42,000 lives and left 62,000 injured, mostly rural individuals and children, in Viet Nam. — VNS
