HA NOI (VNS) — A ceremony to honour 100 outstanding blood donors across the country will be held on Sunday in Ha Noi to mark World Blood Donor Day.

The annual event is organised by the Steering Committee for Voluntarily Blood Donation Mobilisation, in collaboration with the National Institute of Haematology and Blood Transfusion.

Celebrating the theme Thank You For Saving My Life, the event aims to honour blood donors for their time spent and blood donated to needy patients.

Phung Kim Lam in HCM City, who donated blood 96 times, heads the list of this year's 100 outstanding donors. Also from HCM City, Tran Nguyen Hoa ranks second with 74 blood donations, while Le Quoc Thang stands third with 67 donations. Ngo Thi Cam Xuan donated her blood 62 times, becoming the woman with the most blood donations.

A blood donation festival will be organised on Saturday in efforts to collect 1,500 units from donors.

The health ministry estimated that the health sector needs about 4,500 blood units (350 ml per unit) per day to meet the nation's hospitals demands.

Last year, the health sector collected more than 1 million units of blood, an increase of 8.4 per cent compared to 2013.

According to the World Health Organisation, Viet Nam needs about 1.8 million units of blood per year. — VNS
