HCM CITY (VNS) — The first beam was laid for the viaduct that will carry the elevated section of HCM City's metro route No 1 in District 2 on Thursday.

The 19.7 km line links Ben Thanh Market in District 1 with Suoi Tien Tourist Park in District 9.

According to the Management Authority of Urban Railways (MAUR) HCM City, balanced cantilever mount technology will be used for the first time in Viet Nam for building 12km of the 14.5km elevated portion.

The U-shaped beams were pre-fabricated at casting yards in District 9 before being transported to the site.

The viaduct will stretch from Thao Dien Ward in District 2 to Linh Trung Ward in Thu Duc District.

Speaking at the beam installation ceremony, the Chairman of the city People's Committee, Le Hoang Quan said laying the first beam was of great significance for the project. "This is a very important package that affects the progress of the project."

Bui Xuan Cuong, head of MAUR, said so far the project had attained 6 million safe working hours with all machinery and equipment, especially the cranes, being thoroughly checked and tested.

Metro line No 1 will also include a 2.6 km underground section from Ben Thanh Market.

The line will run through Districts 1, 2, 9, Binh Thanh, and Thu Duc in HCM City and Di An District in Binh Duong. — VNS
