HCM CITY (VNS) — HCM City Police yesterday said a truck driver's negligence caused the deaths of five people at the intersection of National Highway No 1A and Linh Trung Processing Zone on Sunday.

Three of the victims were Viet kieu (overseas Vietnamese).

The results of an investigation showed that container truck driver Vo Van Rang, after discovering that his vehicle's brake system had failed, quickly crashed it into a truck near Linh Trung Flyover, causing the other vehicle to plunge over the other side.

The container truck continued to travel at high speed. In an attempt to stop his vehicle, Rang stamped on the gas pedal instead of the brake, and hit a five-seater car that had stopped at a traffic signal.

Rang was reportedly neither drowsy nor under the influence of alcohol when the accident happened, the police said. — VNS
