HA NOI (VNS) — The first-ever awards ceremony in Viet Nam for National External Information Services in journalism was held yesterday in Ha Noi.
The awards recognise journalists' articles over the past year that reflect Viet Nam's politics, economy, culture and social values – as well as important events in the region and the world – and bring them to Vietnamese and international audiences.
Among 515 journalistic works sent to the Awards Organisation Board, 225 came from print newspapers. The rest were from news websites, radio and television broadcasting.
Vietnamese, English, French, Russian, Spanish, Japanese, Korean, Lao, Chinese and Bulgarian were used to write the articles.
Five works were granted first-place prizes, including the Rap News episode about the East Sea dispute by the online newspaper Vietnam+. The video went viral last year. The board also awarded 10 second prizes and 13 third prizes to winners.
Viet Nam News reporters Bui Hoai Nam and Hoang Trung Hieu took home second prize for stories, also on the East Sea.
"At present, external information services are benefitting from numerous new opportunities but also facing an array of challenges," Head of the Central Steering Committee for External Information Services Dinh The Huynh said. "Journalism agencies need to understand the importance of their work to help promote Viet Nam's prestige, and win over the support of the international community and the Vietnamese communities overseas."
Some outstanding works among the winners are expected to be published in several languages, the Awards Steering Board said.
