QUANG NGAI (VNS) — Two modern steel-hulled fishing boats have been delivered to fishermen in Tam Ky district in central Quang Ngai Province.
The boats are 26m in length and 6.8m in width and have been designed with five cargo holds; they also have the capacity to go on fishing trips for 30 days non-stop. In addition, they are equipped with GPS trackers, long-range communication devices, and other modern equipment.
The two boats have engines with 800 horsepower each and were built on a budget of VND8.7 billion (about US$400,000) allocated from the country's fund to support Vietnamese fishermen.
In accordance with a scheme to purchase fishing boats, fishermen have contributed a part of the cost of the modern fishing boats. They are required to return the investment in 11 years without paying any interest.
The two new boats will commence fishing early June.
Chairman of the province's People's Committee said there are approximately 5,000 fishing boats in the province and most of them have wooden hulls. Although they are cheaper to build, they are vulnerable to harsh weather conditions and are easily damaged.
He added that the boats that have been constructed with fishermen fund's financial support will play an important role in ensuring the safety of Vietnamese fishermen and improve their fishing capacity as well as enable them to reinforce the country's sovereignty over its waters.
The two boats were constructed in seven months at Nha Trang Shipyard in nearby Khanh Hoa Province. – VNS
